In late 2016, Mackay Regional Council was successfully awarded $1.3 million dollars in funding through the Queensland Government’s Significant Regional Infrastructure Project Program.

Mackay Regional Council acknowledges the opportunities the funding provides to boost tourism in the region, support economic growth and employment, and enhance liveability for the community. As such, the funding will be used to undertake vital upgrades to the Sarina Field of Dreams Parklands, including the refurbishment and adaptive re-use of the Sarina Railway Station for a new Mackay Region Visitor Information Centre.

Scope of the Parklands upgrades include:
  • Refurbishment and adaptive re-use of the Sarina Railway Station for a new Mackay Region Visitor Information Centre.
  • Improved entrance, turn around and new parking facilities for cars and long vehicles;
  • New footpaths which will link the new paths, existing facilities, new playground and current footpaths in Parkland;
  • Additional community and tourist facilities, including BBQs, tables and bins

The entire project is valued at $3.45 million dollars and is an exciting announcement for Mackay Regional Council and the local community of Sarina.

It is anticipated that on-site works, specifically for the vehicle parking and landscaping works, will commence in late August, weather permitting. The Sarina Field of Dreams Parklands will remain open to the community and visitors throughout the construction period, including access to the Sarina Arts & Crafts, Museum, Art Gallery, Sarina Sugar Shed, Railway platform and Porters Mitre 10. It is anticipated that all on site works will be completed by June 2018, with the main parking and landscaping works forecast to be completed by January 2018, weather permitting.

Council is looking forward to the parkland becoming, vibrant, prosperous and sustainable for the local community and visitors to enjoy!
